The Civil War Era
On his way home to Mississippi, he opted to stop by the Old Crutchfield House to stay the night. While an interest in railroads had spiked early on in Tennessee--around the year a train station did not hit Chattanooga until the late 1840s. Bordering states encouraged Tennesseans to build a railroad of their own, so that their own trains could chug their way through the scenic mountain landscape.

The family moved to Chattanooga in 1871 for better economic opportunity in the city’s economic boom during Reconstruction. Several years after a fire in 1867 destroyed the Crutchfield House, Doctor John T. Read, a surgeon during the Civil War, saw potential in the property. Read and his wife, Caroline, had a hotel in their hometown of McMinnville, Tennessee.
Just two years later, a yellow fever epidemic further compounded the town's woes. Months later in April, the war ignited, and Chattanooga found itself ensnared at the juncture of the opposing forces. In 1862, the hotel served as the headquarters for the local Confederate garrison. That winter, Confederate General Samuel Jones, commander of the Department of East Tennessee, converted the hotel to a military hospital. Chattanooga was occupied by the Union on September 9, 1863, and the 92nd Illinois Infantry Regiment placed its regimental colors atop the hotel to signal their control of the town. The Read House is the longest continuously operating hotel in the southeast, and holds a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.
